Cabinet Makers Custom Built-in Bookcases
Custom Built-ins Gallery
For this Wynnewood condo, we went big—creating a
massive 14' wide by 8' high custom entertainment center that
spans nearly the entire wall. Finished in a Brilliant White
paint, the unit brightens the whole room while providing a
shallow, sleek 20" depth that doesn't eat up the floor space.
The centerpiece is a convenient remote-controlled fireplace
that adds a cozy glow to the Pennsylvanian home. While the
client knew exactly how he wanted the 'secretary-style'
cabinetry laid out, he was worried about the design clashing
with the adjacent kitchen.
I suggested we avoid matching the kitchen doors exactly so
the living room could have its own personality. I built a
custom mission-style door sample featuring a beaded inside
molding to give it a sophisticated, standalone look. He loved
the direction, and the final result is a sensational, one-of-a-
kind piece that perfectly balances scale and style.
When I built this contemporary entertainment center, I didn’t cut
corners on the bones. Even with a crisp white painted finish, I
used solid lumber core maple and veneer core maple for the
entire build. I prefer maple for painted projects because it’s a
professional-grade wood that absorbs paint beautifully, giving
you a smooth, durable finish that lasts much longer than
cheaper alternatives.
To give the piece some real character, I wrapped the top with a
massive 9-inch solid maple crown molding. You’ll find plenty of
storage behind those mission-style cabinet doors and
adjustable bookcases. If you look to the far right, I also
integrated a custom bench seat with hide-away storage
underneath—perfect for tucking away blankets or media. To tie
the whole room together, we wrapped the fireplace hearth and
mantel in a striking black-on-black granite. It adds a bit of
weight and warmth, making this unit a true centerpiece for the
condo.
Living in Old City, you learn to appreciate every inch of
space, especially when you’re dealing with those beautiful
12-foot ceilings. For this project, I built a massive, mission-
style entertainment center designed to fit perfectly into the
home's unique wall niche.
Since we had so much vertical room to work with, I
installed a 8-foot Putnam Rolling Ladder system with
polished nickel hardware so the homeowners could actually
reach that extra storage near the ceiling. The base features
solid wood cabinetry with self-closing doors and drawers,
topped with a 1.5-inch highly polished desktop that frames
the oversized flat-screen TV beautifully.
To round out the "wall of storage," we also integrated a 12-
foot tall open-face adjustable bookcase to the right. It’s a
heavy-duty, functional piece that brings a lot of warmth to
the room without losing that classic Philadelphia charm.
When I design a piece like this custom entertainment center,
I'm thinking about how it actually lives in your home. For this
project, we installed an extra-long rolling ladder track,
allowing the ladder to slide completely out of the way against
the wall when it's not in use.
I believe a cabinet is only as good as the materials inside it.
Even though this was a white paint-grade project, I didn't cut
corners. I used 3/4" and 1/2" solid veneer maple lumber core
throughout. As a professional cabinet maker, maple is my go-
to choice because it’s a true hardwood that stands up to a
lifetime of daily use.
To finish the look, we went with matching polished nickel for
the rolling hardware and the cabinet pulls. We also designed
the lower cabinetry to tuck away all those messy TV cables
and boxes, keeping the whole setup clean and clutter-free.
These stunning double-panel inset cabinetry doors with inner
bead moulding really sent this design over the top. My
customers fell in love with the look, and it was a privilege to
bring their dream cabinetry to life. The inset doors and
drawers capture that authentic mission-style character,
making this particular built-in a perfect fit for the architecture
of this historic Glenside home.
I built the upper open-face bookcase casework to sit
securely on a 1-1/2 inch thick tabletop, framed by wide
vertical mouldings and a face header seated flush to the
ceiling. Behind the doors, you’ll find two adjustable shelves
providing ample storage with a wide 20-inch access point.
Measuring 96" x 96" x 20", this custom build serves as a
grand armoire for the master bedroom. For the final look, we
went with elegant black handles that pop against the
"rockhard" Extra White paint finish.
When a client in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood
reached out with an inspiration photo for her basement, I
knew exactly how to bring that vision to life. The goal
was to maximize the awkward, angled space under her
staircase with high-end, functional cabinetry storage.
Measuring (W) 84" x (H) 72", this custom project started
with a precise on-site template of the stair angle to
ensure a seamless fit. Back in my shop, I handcrafted
these Mission-style doors using solid lumber core Hard
Rock Maple with durable half-inch thick center panels.
This isn't just about looks—it’s built for heavy use.
Inside, you’ll find deep storage and adjustable shelving,
including a custom-fitted bookcase on the right side. To
ensure it stays looking brand new for decades, I finished
the entire unit in a "rock-hard maple" with brilliant white
paint.
From our initial phone conferences to the final install, the
client and I worked closely to make sure every detail
matched her original idea. The result? A perfectly fitted,
lifetime-quality basement transformation that left the
homeowner absolutely thrilled.

I recently finished this project for a businessman in
Center City, Philadelphia. He needed a high-end look
for his temporary home but didn't want to leave his
investment behind when he eventually relocates. To
solve that, I designed this brilliant white entertainment
center in five easy-to-move sections.
What makes this build unique is how it installs. As you
slide the sections together, the moldings overlap to hide
the seams, giving you that "built-in" look without the
permanent footprint. I even built the baseboard and
tabletop in a two-piece design so they just slide right
into place. Specs and Features: Dimensions: 14' wide
x 8' tall x 12" deep. Capacity: Custom-sized for a 65-
inch TV with plenty of room for media components.
Ambiance: I integrated Bluetooth LED lighting in the top
rows that you can control right from your phone.
Security: For peace of mind, I used L-shaped non-tilting
safety brackets to anchor everything securely to the
wall.
It’s the perfect mix of a timeless modern style and
practical portability. My client is thrilled knowing he can
take his library and TV unit with him to his next location.
Transform your home with a timeless centerpiece designed for
both utility and elegance. This exquisite, masterfully built
secretary was custom-crafted from premium Southern Cherry
wood by the experts at Cabinet Makers Custom Built-in
Bookcases. Designed specifically for our Old City, Philadelphia
clients, this piece cleverly blends the classic secretary desk
style with modern storage needs. It features expansive
cabinetry and drawers, balanced by sophisticated upper
bookshelves encased in elegant glass doors. Premium
Craftsmanship & Specifications: Every inch of this cabinetry is
built to last a lifetime. We finished the Southern Cherry with a
hand-rubbed oil wood stain to bring out the natural grain, then
applied a high-resin lacquer for maximum durability and
protection.
Overall Dimensions: 14' (W) x 8' (H), Base Depth: 16"
Upper Bookcase Depth: 12". Materials: Authentic Southern
Cherry Wood. Finish: Hand-rubbed Oil with High-Resin Lacquer
The Result: A high-quality, heirloom-grade cabinetry solution
that offers ample display space without sacrificing hidden
storage. (See the clients testimonial for this project here)

For this Ardmore, Pennsylvania, home law office, our
client sought the timeless atmosphere of a traditional
law library. Despite the compact 12' x 12' x 8' room
dimensions, we maximized the space by designing a
sophisticated layout featuring two 45° angled bookcases
paired with two straight bookcases. This configuration
provides extensive shelving and cabinetry storage
without compromising the room’s flow.
The craftsmanship is defined by high-end architectural
details. The vertical moldings are 2" wide with triple
fluting that graduates upward into high fascias, topped
with a classic colonial crown molding. The cabinetry
doors and drawers utilize a five-piece raised-panel inset
style, offering a seamless and tailored aesthetic.
Technical Specifications & Premium Hardware:
Storage Solutions: Inset-style base cabinetry featuring
double shelving, ample drawer space, and two
integrated pull-out under-tabletop trays.
High-End Hardware: Equipped with Blum under-mount
soft-closing and self-closing glides, complemented by
hidden Blum cabinet hinges and minimalist edge-pull
handles.
Natural Finish: To honor the integrity of the solid cherry
hardwood, no wood stain was applied. This allows the
cherry wood to naturally darken over time into its
signature deep rose color—a process that is already
creating a warm, welcoming environment for this
professional workspace.
By combining the beauty of solid cherry with modern
storage functionality, this project reflects the success
and professional standards of its owner.

Custom Built-In Entertainment Center for a Modern,
Haverford, Pennsylvania Home
This project was a personal favorite—a sleek, contemporary
entertainment center designed specifically to fit the
proportions of this beautiful Haverford home.
The homeowner came to me with a clear vision: a clean, built-
in structure with fixed shelving that felt like part of the
architecture. We positioned the TV exactly 12 inches off the
floor to ensure comfortable, eye-level viewing from their low-
profile couch. To keep the look uncluttered, I integrated a
discreet drop-down access panel just below the TV to hide
away cables and components, leaving the open shelving free
for books and family photos.
The scale of this piece is truly impressive. It spans 10 feet
wide and wraps around the adjacent wall to reveal a hidden
gem: a backside bookcase featuring a 1/4-inch plate glass
door for their most prized collection. Standing 8 feet tall, the
unit sits tight to the ceiling with a 5-inch plinth board, giving it
that permanent, high-end built-in finish that only custom
cabinetry can achieve.
Custom Under-Stairs Built-in Cabinetry &
Bookcase, Fishtown, Philadelphia
In the heart of South Philadelphia, I recently had the
pleasure of working in a classic Brownstone where the
goal was perfect symmetry. The homeowner already
had a beautiful cabinetry built-in bookcase on one side
of the room and tasked me with duplicating it "to a T" for
the opposite wall.
These twin built-ins were designed to be seamless
additions to the home’s character. The lower section
features eight inset Shaker-style doors, topped with a
massive 1 1/2" thick solid maple tabletop.
I built these for strength and longevity:
Heavy-Duty Construction: 3/4" heavy wall frames and
1/2" backing boards for a rock-solid, rigid build.
Adjustable Storage: All shelving is 3/4" thick, designed
to hold a serious library without sagging.
Custom Details: I used 3 1/2" solid maple moldings to
perfectly match the existing Shaker door profiles and trim in the room. Precision was everything on this job. I made sure every
shelf lined up exactly with the neighboring unit to create a balanced, professional look. Seeing the customers "over the top"
thrilled with the match is why I love doing what I do. It’s not just a shelf; it’s a piece of the home’s history.
Handcrafted Built-In Entertainment
Center, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
This stunning red oak media entertainment center,
finished in a deep, warm Aged Bourbon wood stain
and a furniture-quality clear coat, recently transformed
a home for one of my clients in Bryn Mawr. As a
cabinet maker, there is nothing better than seeing a
piece come together that perfectly fits a room’s
character and a customer's vision.
The unit features mission-style doors with custom
extra bead molding. I used bifold openings to ensure
the interior is fully accessible without the doors
swinging too far into the living space. Technical
Specifications & Materials:
Dimensions: The full built-in measures 16' x 92" x 13",
with a center section designed at 58" x 22" deep.
Construction: Built to last using 3/4" solid oak veneer
lumber core. Hardware: The doors are solid stick oak, hung with rugged Blum hinges and smooth bifold rail glides for daily
durability. Work Surface: I set the 1-1/2" thick tabletop at a 36" standing height, making it comfortable and functional for
browsing media or setting down drinks. It was a pleasure to handle this project from the workshop to the final, seamless
installation. I’m honored to say the customer is absolutely thrilled with her new centerpiece.

Custom Cherry Wood Secretary Home Office
Built-In, Bridgeton, New Jersey
This beautiful domestic Pennsylvania cherry wood built-in was
carefully designed to sit perfectly centered between the
double-hung windows of this Bridgeton, New Jersey home. As
a cabinet maker, I believe the right materials make all the
difference, which is why this secretary-style cabinetry and
upper bookcase were constructed using only the finest cherry
hardwoods.
Design & Craftsmanship Details:
Cabinet Doors: I chose a Shaker-style look, accented with 3/8"
bead molding and flat center panels for a clean, classic
aesthetic.
Dovetail Joinery: The drawers feature 5/8" thick sides with
traditional dovetail joinery, offset from the lower doors to
create a stylish, custom profile.
Solid Wood Construction: The 1-1/2" thick tabletop, knee
sides, and upper bookcases—along with the gorgeous triple-
fluted moldings—are all milled from solid stick cherry hardwood.
Premium Hardware: I fitted every door and drawer with high-quality, self-closing hardware for a smooth, mechanical feel.
It was a privilege to bring this project to life in Bridgeton, creating a cherry wood built-in that serves as a seamless architectural
complement to this beautiful home.

Custom Sapele Hardwood Home Office Built-In
Secretary Bookcases, Elkins Park, Philadelphia
I recently wrapped up this custom secretary-style bookcase
for a home in Elkins Park, and the natural West African
Sapele is the real star here. To let the wood’s natural ribbon
grain shine, I skipped the stain entirely and went with multiple
clear-coat finishes for a durable, lifetime surface.
The Craftsmanship & Details:
Lower Cabinetry: Features inset doors with double-shelf
storage and smooth, self-closing drawer boxes.
Solid Surfaces: The tabletops are a sturdy 1 1/2" thick,
designed with a functional step-down in the center to house
electronic components.
Adjustable Shelving: The upper units use solid 3/4"
adjustable shelves. I lined up the 2 1/4" wide vertical
moldings perfectly with the face-framing on the base cabinets
for a continuous, architectural look.
The Fit: The top horizontal header was scribed and tied
seamlessly to the ceiling, giving the entire library a true built-
in feel.

Custom Cherry Wood Fireplace Cabinetry
Surround, Queen Village, Philadelphia
This floor-to-ceiling cherry wood fireplace surround
stands 13 feet tall and 10 feet wide, designed to bring
both warmth and symmetry to a unique Center City
home. As a local cabinet maker, I built this piece
specifically for a client in Queen Village who needed to
square off an oddly shaped living room while adding
significant storage.
The base features ten five-piece raised panel doors
equipped with self-closing European hidden hinges. I
designed the bottom door bank to sit 10 inches deeper
than the upper towers; this provides a more substantial
look and creates extra counter space on either side of
the solid black granite hearth.
The real challenge and beauty of this installation are the
angles. To seamlessly integrate the unit with the
neighboring walls, I set the black granite hearth and the
top crown molding at precise 30° angles. This 30°
geometry continues through the sides of the bookcase,
allowing for a perfect fit against the wall and a rock-solid
anchor into the studs. It’s a massive, functional focal
point that truly transforms the architecture of the room.

Custom Solid Cherry Home Office
Library, Yardley, Pennsylvania
I recently completed this partial home office renovation
in Yardley, Pennsylvania, where I designed and
prefabricated this custom cherry wood bookcase in my
woodworking shop before handling the full installation.
To ensure it fit perfectly between the two 16-foot walls, I
custom-sized every inch, leaving no gaps and tying the
top shelf header directly into the ceiling with a bold 5-
inch cherry crown molding.
The construction is built for both beauty and heavy-duty
use. I used 1.5-inch solid cherry for the tabletop to easily
support the weight of the massive adjustable bookcases
above. Below, the solid wood raised panel doors hide
plenty of reinforced shelving, providing more than
enough storage for office supplies and equipment. To
wrap it all up, I finished the entire unit with a high-resin,
high-gloss lacquer. This spray finish isn't just for looks; it
provides a tough, long-lasting barrier that will protect the
wood for decades.

When this Center City couple reached out, they had a
common Philadelphia rowhome dilemma: they needed
serious first-floor storage but didn't want to ruin the flow
of their kitchen and dining area with a bulky, basic
closet. They brought me a vision and a hand-drawn
sketch for a built-in that was both stylish and highly
functional.
Using high-quality oak, I brought their design to life.
This unit features a mix of open shelving for display
and plenty of custom cabinetry to keep daily essentials
tucked out of sight. They even smartly integrated a
small entertainment center to house their TV and audio
gear. It’s a great example of how a homeowner’s DIY
design can be turned into a professional, permanent
fixture that clears the clutter.

Located near the Philadelphia Art Museum, this
stunning custom entertainment center proves that
historic homes can embrace modern utility. An architect-
designed masterpiece, this 12’ (W) x 8’ (H) x 16’’ (D),
"Extra White" unit was engineered to seamlessly wrap
around existing radiators and wall pipes.
The design features unique bi-level tabletops
complemented by a third, ceiling-height shelf for
elevated decor display.
To add texture and depth, the unit features original tree-
motif wallpaper backing that spans the entire width
perfectly. This bespoke cabinetry blends "Extra White"
modern aesthetics with functional spatial problem-
solving. Our client is thrilled with how this custom
installation transformed her cozy Philadelphia home into
a high-design sanctuary.

As a cabinet maker, I take a lot of honor in the structural integrity of
every piece that leaves my shop. This matching built-in bookcase with
cabinetry is built using solid lumber core hard rock maple for all the
doors, drawer fronts, and the desktop. It’s not just about the look; it’s
about using premium materials that stand up to daily use.
For the drawer boxes, I use traditional four-corner dovetail joints,
ensuring they remain sturdy for decades. I’ve paired the wood with
beautiful, highly polished nickel cabinetry handles for a clean,
professional finish.
The "carcass"—including the sides, tops, and backing—is constructed
from high-quality 3/4” and 1/2” maple veneer core for maximum
stability. To pull it all together, I finish each unit with multiple coats of a
high-resin satin clear coat. This creates a protective barrier that
preserves the wood's natural grain while providing a lifetime of
durability.

Custom Red Oak Entertainment Center,
Point Breeze, South Philadelphia
It’s a great feeling to help a homeowner turn an empty wall
niche into the focal point of their living room. For this project in
Point Breeze, we used solid red oak to build a custom
entertainment center that fits the space perfectly while adding
some real warmth to the home.
I worked closely with the client, who actually mapped out the
whole layout in Excel. We included some unique touches, like
an elliptical header and a matching tabletop for the DVD
player to get the exact look she wanted. On the practical side,
we left an open floor area on the bottom left specifically for a
doggie bed, then wrapped the rest of the unit with adjustable
shelving for plenty of storage. To tie the whole room together, I
also built a matching fireplace mantel. Seeing it all come
together in that South Philly niche was a lot of fun, and I’m
glad we could turn her vision into a one-of-a-kind reality.
This custom built-in bookcase project was all about bringing
some life back to a tired living room in Yardley, PA. Instead of
a standard mantel, these homeowners wanted something
more substantial for their remodel—a full custom oak built-in
bookcase fireplace surround flanked by towering built-in
bookshelves.
I designed this piece to sit right on the existing brick hearth,
with the two towers reaching up toward the ceiling. To give it
that classic look, I finished the top with a 4-inch colonial oak
crown molding.
We went with fixed shelving here to ensure it was sturdy
enough for a heavy book collection while still leaving plenty of
height for taller decorative pieces. I installed the entire unit
unfinished, as the homeowners wanted to handle the staining
and polyurethane themselves to really put their own stamp on
the project.

This recent project is a great example
of what we can do when we combine
traditional craftsmanship with a
massive scale. Stretching 20 feet
wide and reaching over 10 feet high,
this library was designed to fill the
room without losing that sense of fine
detail. Because I have a strict "no
particle board" rule, every inch of this
unit is built using 100% premium
veneer core and solid wood—no
shortcuts, just honest materials.
Quality You Can Feel. I built this unit
using solid Maple for the face frames, the 14 raised-panel doors, and all the custom-fluted moldings. When you’re working with a
piece this size, the integrity of the lumber is what keeps the lines straight and the finish flawless for years to come.
Hand-Built Inset Cabinetry. For the base, I went with seven sets of double doors in a classic inset style. These are the kind of
doors that sit perfectly flush with the frame, anchored by Blumotion soft-close hinges so they’re as quiet as they are sturdy. The
whole piece is grounded by a 5-inch architectural baseboard and finished with a heavy, 1-3/4" thick solid Maple tabletop.
Adjustable Bookcases & Architectural Details
Above the counter, I installed seven tiers of adjustable shelving, all perfectly lined up with the cabinetry below. I added some
specific details to give this library its character:
* Triple-Fluted Moldings: These 3-inch wide dividers feature beaded edges and custom relief transitions that I milled right here in
the shop.
* Rolling Library Ladder: I specifically designed the upper section with a 6-inch mounting space, making it perfectly ready for a
5-inch rolling ladder rail system.
* Smart Integration: To keep things modern, I tucked in three dedicated electrical outlets to hide wires for Wi-Fi speakers and
charging stations.
The "White-on-White" Finish. To give the room some depth, we went with a "white-on-white" look. The main Maple cabinetry is
finished in a crisp, flat Bright White. For the back panels, I used 1/2" Ash veneer core in a slightly softer off-white. It’s a subtle
contrast, but it really lets you see the natural beauty of the wood grain behind your books.

Custom Fireplace Surrounds & Mission-Style Mantles in
Washington Square West
This custom fireplace surround serves as the architectural centerpiece of
a stunning condo in the Washington Square West neighborhood of
Philadelphia. Featuring a substantial, extra-thick mantle and a towering,
inlaid mission-style upper panel, this project was designed to command
attention and harmonize with the home’s impressive scale.
From Inspiration to Reality: Custom Mission-Style Craftsmanship
The homeowner, Maria, came to me with a vision—a single photograph
and a question: could I recreate this look while scaling it for her soaring
12-foot ceilings? To bring this dream to life, I didn't just copy the image; I
elevated it.
While the final aesthetic is a clean, brilliant white, the "bones" of the
piece are where the quality lies. I utilized only premium hard-rock maple
and solid-core lumber from the USA and Canada. I chose these
materials specifically for their superior durability and their ability to hold a
flawless, furniture-grade paint finish that won't degrade over time.
To add a signature touch to the mission-style aesthetic, I suggested an
inner rounded beading detail. After providing a custom sample, we
moved forward with the build. The result is a magnificent, precision-fit
surround that perfectly frames her pellet stove, providing Maria with a
warm, elegant space to work and relax during those cold Philadelphia
winters.
Real Projects, Real Homes—Enhanced for Clarity
Every project featured on this site is a custom piece I personally designed and built for a customer's home. Because my expertise is in
cabinetry rather than professional photography, some of my site photos don't always capture the true quality of the work. While the
majority of the images here are original and untouched, I have used AI to polish a few select photos that were out of focus or poorly lit.
This allows you to see the joinery and detail more clearly. The photography may be digitally corrected, but the craftsmanship is 100% my
own handcrafted work.
This 20-foot-wide oak entertainment center and library,
designed for an 8-foot ceiling, serves as a masterclass
in custom precision. The layout features five distinct
vertical tiers of built-in bookcases flanking a 56-inch-
wide TV section. Beneath the TV, we integrated three
wood-framed oak doors featuring 3/16-inch thick
tempered glass for protected, visible storage.
Precision Craftsmanship and Quality Materials
We prioritize structural integrity and long-term
performance in every project. Every component,
including the shelving, is crafted from A1 high-grade,
100% formaldehyde-free veneer core—we never use particle board. The 3/4-inch thick shelves are fixed to ensure every shelf
aligns perfectly on the same horizontal plane, providing a clean, uninterrupted visual line. The 2-inch wide vertical dividers
contribute to the unit’s sleek, modern profile.
Scribed for a Perfect Fit
Achieving a seamless installation in a finished basement required meticulous attention to the existing structure. Because the
floor varied by a full inch—tapering from 2 inches on the right side to 3 inches on the left—every section was custom-scribed to
ensure the entire built-in is perfectly level and plumb.
Integrated Design and Custom Finish
To create a cohesive architectural look, we incorporated shelving over the doorway located to the left of the TV area. The side
jambs of the bookcase were finished and the door frame was re-molded in matching stained oak. By using consistent case
moldings, the transition between the built-in and the doorway is virtually invisible. The entire project is finished with ZAR "Beach
House" wood stain and protected with a premium clear coat finish.
